Making the smallest of changes to a room can make an enormous difference. It may add style, space or functionality which can breathe new life into your home. You may think this kind of change requires weeks or maybe months of hard work.
Clearly that is not necessarily the case. If you have the right skills or the patience to do some extensive YouTube-ing, some simple DIY projects can be completed over the weekend.
So to start refreshing your home today, why not complete one or two of these DIY updates?
Install a Dimmer Switch
Lighting can have a huge effect on the look and feel of a room. In some rooms, having a dimmer switch installed can be a convenient way of creating a softer lighting effect.
My coworker Kelly can attest to my sadness over no longer having a dimmer in my bedroom which at the end of the day when you’re sleepy eyes can’t handle the light, can feel brutal.
Dimmers are also ideal for when you’re relaxing in the bath or having a dinner party with friends. Replacing your current light switch with a dimmer switch can be done in no time with significant results.
First ensure the bulbs you use are suitable for the switch and it goes without saying that for this kind of project, always turn off the power to the unit beforehand.
Paint or Wallpaper Your Walls
Painting a room is one of the quickest ways to give it a quick refresher. All you need is a pot of paint and a brush or roller. Look at the rooms in your home and work out which is most in need of a fresh coat of color.
Then decide whether you want to stick to the same hue or try something different. Cover up and move your furniture and belongings and get painting.
Get your significant other or friends to give you a helping hand so this job takes as little time as possible. You’ll be able to see a difference instantly.
For a more dramatic change to your bedroom or living room, why not try wallpapering instead. You can now find repositionable and self-adhesive wallpaper online and interior design boutiques.
These don’t require traditional paste and can be applied and moved multiple times until you get the look you want. So instead of waiting for a professional to do it for you, you can do it quickly and easily by yourself.
Add and upgrade your cabinets
Cabinets are a perfect storage solution for kitchens and bathrooms while being versatile enough to use in any room of your home. So why not create more storage space by building and installing a cabinet into your home office or bedroom?
Ready to assemble cabinets, otherwise known as RTA cabinets can be found at most hardware stores and online. They take little time to put together and come in almost endless different shapes and sizes to suit your needs and preferences.
Instead of attempting to build a cabinet from literal planks, you can paint or replace your current hardware to give them the upgrade they are in dire need of.
These updates may be minor, but they can add value (even if only in your eyes) and make your home a more comfortable place to live.
What do you have planned for your weekend?

April 20, 2016I am really horrible at many DIY but installing a dimmer is something I think I can do. My Dad has done stuff like that since I was a kid and he used to dim my lights in my room when I was little because I was afraid of the dark. LOL. I learned a lot of technical stuff from him so if I attempt this and make a mess of it, I know he can steer me in the right direction. 🙂
