Just like in any area of our lives, we find ourselves a bit restless and wishing to improve personally, professionally and beyond. That desire for improvement also extends to our home, does it seem time to make changes in your house or apartment? Here are three renovations many consider first.
The office
This point is especially pertinent if you or your partner work from home. A positive working environment is directly linked to productivity and overall happiness. Conversely, a room or space that lacks creativity and is poorly organized would have the exact opposite effect.
If you spend a lot of time in your home office, and it isn’t an area with light to aid inspiration, it’s probably time to make a few changes. First, look at your lighting. If it’s lacking, could you add a skylight?
Another option is to remove a brick wall (this pained me to write that due to my affinity to interior brick) and replace it with glass doors? Then, look at the working space specifically. Would building or investing in a different desk and more luxe office chair help?
Adding a few more storage solutions could help reduce clutter and make for a cleaner space. Finally, consider sound. If you are regularly disturbed by noises from the outside, consider insulating the walls or comfortable noise-cancelling headphones. This will help block some of the disturbances and allow you to work in peace.
The roof
In terms of necessary and effective residential upkeep and improvement, this is at the top of the list. A damaged roof can lead to all sort of problems. If water is able to leak through, it can lead to the growth of mold. Water coming in through the roof can also damage your home’s insulation.
Removing this is hard work (no I am not speaking from experience nor do I wish to), but leaving it there is a hazard to your health. Regarding structure or instability, it can also be unsafe for you to be spending time underneath a damaged roof.
Consider this; replacing a struggling roof may be a major investment now, however any costs incurred will be significantly less than if you have to also replace and fix other things. This might include walls, fixing your insulation and attempting to remove mold. Like a trip to the dentist, it’s always better to deal with the problem sooner rather than later.
Your bathroom
This is a real win-win renovation! If you’re not planning on moving, you get to enjoy the luxury of a newly-renovated bathroom. If you are moving, it is highly likely that the renovation will add value to the list and sale price. Making your bathroom sleek and appealing is well worth the investment whatever you’re doing it for.
If you are planning on selling, it is crucial to look at the market you’re selling too. If your house is in an area where older families reside, is the room and its amenities accessible? If your house is near great schools and parks, will it be popular with families when listed on the market?
If this is the case, and you don’t have a bath, think about having one installed. Families with young children in particular need baths for their children. Some will walk away from a property without question if there isn’t a bathtub. You’ll find more Things To Consider When Renovating Your Bathroom here.
Similarly, transforming an unused space or cupboard under the stairs into a further bathroom can add insurmountable value to your everyday experience at home.

April 5, 2016I like the thought of renovating the office and bathroom. I think that would add a lot of value to the home, and if you were staying in it would be a nice upgrade fo your place. I will pass this on to my friend who works from home. It would be a win-win to renovate the office for himself. Thank you for the information!

April 8, 2016Great article! I am interested in turning an unused bedroom into a home office for myself. I have an old fashioned desk that I would love to use but it’s a bit big and I don’t want to cramp up the room too much. But I don’t want to buy another desk just to fit the room better, since I like the one I have. I need to think on this. I appreciate your blog for these renovation tips. It gives me lots to think about.
