Just as we make an effort to keep our hair and skin in good condition and prepare for seasonal changes, we need to do the same for our homes.
As homeowners, annual home maintenance should be made a priority, and should never be put off. Despite some maintenance tasks being a bit pricey, by putting them off, we tend to do more expensive damage than good.
That’s why it’s crucial that as homeowners that we put as much time and effort into caring for our properties as we do our beauty regimes and bodies.
The question is what are the maintenance tasks that we should be focusing on, to keep our homes in standard working order?
Exterior paintwork
There’s nothing worse for a property’s curb appeal than paintwork that’s stained or peeling. As a rule of thumb, exterior paint should be redone once every three years.
However it’s still important to check the paintwork on an annual basis. Especially as sometimes adverse weather and other environmental factors can cause damage.
Every 12 months, pressure wash the exterior of your home. This will remove dirt and grime, making the paint look cleaner and newer. However, it may also show other problems, such as peeling or grime that won’t budge.
If this is the case it may be time to paint your property again. If you don’t want to go DIY with this, solid results for ‘paint my house’ along with what local decorating companies will populate.
Fix Broken or Damaged Roofing
If there’s one thing that can cause unimaginable damage to your home, it’s roof tiles that are cracked or broken. Believe it or not, even the smallest of cracks can lead to water entering your home, causing damp and mold.
Gaps in your roof can also allow pests to enter and nest there. So it’s crucial that at least once a year you have your roof checked and any problems addressed in a timely manner.
You can opt to brave the ladder and check out your roofing yourself (not recommended), or you can hire a professional to come and check it over for you.
It’s completely up to you regarding which route you choose, however, using a professional service is probably best.
You don’t know what signs to look out for, you could end up missing something, and potentially cause more damage without realizing .
Have your Carpets Cleaned
This may not seem as important as the other two but believe it or not, it is.
The thing about carpets is that they can last for years if you take time to look after them, that is.
Carpets get into a bad state fairly quickly, dusty, salt form the roads during Winter and any other substances your shoes track in can image a carpets look and overall longevity of life.
By giving them a deep clean once a year, you can keep them looking good for longer.
Thus potentially saving yourself a lot of money on replacing them, and making your home more valuable, should you prepare to sell.
These maintenance tasks may not seem like they can have a big impact on your home if you fail to complete them, but the fact is they can do. So it pays to keep on top of them and complete them, along with anything else that needs doing, once every 12 months.
