Are you one of those people that have flirted with the thought of packing up and living the tiny house life? I have to admit, having seen a few episodes of Tiny House Big Living, I have fantasized about what a more minimalist life would be like.
Thankfully Dan quickly brought me back to earth noting that I constantly say our 1,000 square foot apartment (if you include our roof deck) is far too small.
Regardless, when Tuxbury Tiny House Village reached out to invite me along for a petite retreat, I was thrilled to be able to live out one of my HGTV dreams and conveniently so with it being only an hour from Boston!
We had a wonderful time and during each experience, I learned more and more about acclimating to less space and how to embrace a more simplified life. Below are a few tips to carry with you before embarking on tiny house living (albeit temporary!)
Embrace Your Environment
While tiny houses provide all of the modern conveniences (toilet, shower, kitchen sink, refrigerator, electricity, stove, AC), there may still be additional aspects you aren’t accustomed to if you’re a city dweller like us.
Having daily access to a campfire next to our little Henry meant we spent a great deal more time outside, reading, cooking on the fire (okay this was all Dan), roasting marshmallows, and exploring the nearby bodies of water.
Be sure to also explore the neighborhood! We found wonderful local gems like an adorable farm that only enhanced our time away so be sure to keep your eyes (and ears) open!
Don’t Skimp On Your Creature Comforts
No matter where I go, I always see any trip as a self-care opportunity, adding a few face, eye, and lip masks into my toiletry bag.
Just because there may be a bit less room, that doesn’t mean you need to skip out on your self-care rituals completely. I brought a hanging toiletry bag that housed all of my beauty products in the bathroom without getting in the way.
Change Up Your Routine
You’ve taken the plunge to put yourself in a new environment and experience, so why maintain the same routine? Changing things up will help you forgo the comparison you’re apt to make in making a smoothie at home in your spacious kitchen to the one in your tiny house kitchen (and any letdowns!)
Plan to change things up a bit in doing a little research on the most convenient camping recipes that align with your lifestyle or another element of your day that is important to you.
Here’s to new adventures and experiences that contribute to your already wonderful life!
