Sunday is officially the first day of Spring here in Boston and yet we are slated for a snowstorm and reach 65 degrees 4 days later. Okay then.
I hate to be yet another New Englander crying about the weather but this winter has wreaked havoc on all of our immune systems.
I have never missed more than a few days of work from colds and we had a record high of sick days in our office this year, much of it we felt could be attributed to the drastic highs and lows we experienced.
Below are a few tips on how to handle what is set to be a series of very warm days to come.
For most of us…
Summer is the hottest time of the year. While it’s important for us all to spend time outside in the sunshine, sometimes it’s just too hot to handle. It can leave you feeling sticky and uncomfortable, and the last thing you want is for your makeup to be melting off your face.
Overheating can also be a serious health issue. So it’s vital that you know how to keep yourself cool when the summer months arrive.
Style your hair in a different way
If you have longer hair, it tends to trap the sun’s heat on your neck, you’re never going to feel comfortably cool. So consider transforming your look for summer with a new updo or style. You might want to cut it shorter for a more drastic look, which will also help to keep your temperature down.
If you want to keep your long flowing locks, look at hair styling tutorials for cute styles that won’t overheat you. Don’t forget to put plenty of sunscreen on your neck and ears now they are more exposed.
Learn how to make some cool treats
If you love party planning and socializing with your friends in the summer, then this is something you need to try. There are plenty of frozen drinks, snacks and food you can make to keep everyone fresh and happy when it’s hot.
You could try making ice-cream cupcakes, frozen yogurt lollipops or watermelon slushies. For a healthier treat, why not try cool cucumber soup or a chocolate avocado frosty. These are bound to go down as a successful treat with your friends and family and make staying cool a lot of fun.
Rethink your outfit choices
While you might still be wearing items from your winter wardrobe, these probably won’t be ideal as the temperature rises. Clothing can have a huge effect on our body temperature.
So it’s important in summer, not to wear anything that could cause us to overheat. Loose-fitting, light colored clothing is best as it gives our skin and body room to breathe. While also absorbing less sunlight.
Black is one of the worst colors you can wear as it absorbs virtually all of the sun’s heat, therefore making you incredibly hot. So start buying adorable summer outfits and have them ready for when summer arrives.
Have central air installed
It might be an extravagant purchase for some of us. But having central air installed in your home rather than relying on a few window units is an easy way of controlling the temperature and keeping your entire place cool.
It will boost the comfort of your home on even the hottest of days. During installation also ask if they can provide ongoing central air conditioning repair too. So if anything goes wrong, you won’t be without it for too long. It’s an investment that will pay for itself in no time at all.
These are just a few techniques you can use to stay cool during the summer months. Remember always to wear a high factor sunscreen every time you go outside to ensure sufficient protection from the sun’s rays.

April 8, 2016I live in Australia in Queensland where the weather for the main is quite temperate all year round…..however I grew up in a country town in New South Wales where summers peaked over the 40 celsius mark…and winters were the opposite…below zero at times….one had to adapt to the seasons to survive….winter was warm wooly clothing and plenty of it and summer was shorts and that’s about it unless going out which meant a bit more attire….one thing about summer was you had to stay hydrated and out of the sun….heatstroke was common in that area….I learned at an early age the effects of climate and changes associated…one must ensure that one adapts to the weather…..I like your article here…you have provided some useful insight for us all
