If you’re about to start planning your next big trip but don’t know where to go, I would consider a place that isn’t currently (but should be) on your list. North Carolina could be the vacation destination of your dreams.
It may not seem like the most obvious place to spend a week with your significant other or family as many people tend to associate it with motors ports and being the birthplace of Krispy Kreme doughnuts.
It’s also a state that is filled with history, beauty, fantastic shopping and amazing food. So if you’re still working out ideas on where to have your next Summer getaway, here are some fantastic reasons why North Carolina should be top of the list.
It’s Outer Banks
If you’re desperate to go on a beach holiday, look no further. The Outer Banks are barrier islands a short distance off the coast of North Carolina. They’ve become a top tourist destination, and it’s not hard to see why.
With two hundred miles of white sand beaches and surrounded by blue waters, it’s a relaxing place to recharge your batteries. You can relax in the sun with a good book (and wine) or take part in one of the outer lands many fun outdoor activities.
From surfing to parasailing, there is more than enough going on to keep you entertained throughout your stay. If this sounds appealing, click here to look for some options.
It’s Acclaimed Food and Drink
North Carolina is a state that does BBQ right (this coming from a girl raised by a Georgia native.)
So right that it has become famous for it with people traveling far and wide just to get a taste.
Visit the city of Lexington, which is considered the capital of BBQ food in North Carolina. Here you’ll find an array of restaurants and cafes full of exciting and delicious recipes that are just waiting to be devoured.
In addition to Krispy Kreme doughnuts, North Carolina is also the birthplace of Pepsi. You can most likely purchase a few collectors edition bottles, enjoy a drink, see the processing plant and more.
Duck…No Really Duck
Duck offers beautiful, luxe rentals right on the ocean with a host of activities like deep sea fishing, and kayaking while the shopping is unparalleled.
It’s History & Culture
If you love sightseeing and learning more about the history of a locale, North Carolina will not disappoint.
The Wright brothers, who helped discover aviation had their first successful flight in North Carolina. There is a breath-taking memorial you can visit to find out exactly how they did it.
In 2011, a shipwreck off the coast was found to belong to the ruthless and infamous pirate Captain Blackbeard. It’s said to have sunk sometime in the 18th Century, but I won’t say anymore as to spoil the tour!
With museums, art galleries and statues dotted throughout the state; it will be like taking a walk through time. See the NC historic sites website to discover what other historical attractions you can visit during your stay.
The Blue Ridge Mountains
If you’re looking for exciting outdoor experiences, Boone is definitely the place for you. All the hiking us sporty gals can handle, horseback riding, and of course whitewater rafting.
All set in one of the most beautiful areas, I love the idea of spending a day or two being active before heading to a more luxurious secluded location for the remainder of my trip.
While the above reasons may be compelling but they barely scratch the surface of why you should visit North Carolina this summer.
Have you vacationed in North Carolina yet and if so, where did you spend the majority of your time?
