Moving is stressful regardless of if you are moving down the street or cross country. There are a few easy and important ideas and tips to help you to make it as easy as possible. Follow along with what has helped me when it comes to moving!
Do the Prep
I have never not gotten an apartment deposit back and Dan loves to jokingly remind me he has never gotten one back! This of course made me all the more determined to ensure we got ours back. 6 months prior I created a punch list of small repairs we needed to make, a few each weekend, to ensure the apartment was in excellent shape.
Small things: filling holes, taking down hooks, taking a magic eraser to easily remove scuffs.
And you know what? We got our deposit back!
Handle the Tedious Stuff As Early As Possible
I had never done a cross-country move before! All of the minutiae of updating your car insurance (which is tied to our home insurance), registration, license plates, drivers licenses, utilities, and more was something we researched early on so it would not weigh on our minds (the unknowns always do!)
One thing I also did was if I knew I wasn’t going to have enough time packing my items, I hired a moving company to do it for me. Bearded Brothers Moving Group is a highly recommended company in the Ohio area that can assist you with packing, moving, and unpacking your prize possessions quickly and efficiently.
Nervous to move heavy items such as a couch or your bed frame? These trained professionals are there to help as well as even move pool tables in the Youngstown, Ohio area.
Lean On Others When You Can
I know my limits which at 35 means no more hauling large couches and furniture, nor do I want to hound my husband about cleaning tasks!
I booked an extra deep clean with our cleaners and incredible movers, so all we had to do was focus on being packed, organized, and start on our exciting journey west!
It made leaving the house feel good not only for us but the new family that was moving in.
Two Months Out: Research Your Daily, Weekly & Monthly Routines
I researched the best vet for little Frida. Of course, I want it to be as close to our home as possible in case of any emergency that comes about.
One of the reasons we chose Columbus, OH is it has an incredible Lupus Center, I requested my medical records in Boston and had everything transferred over and a PCP appointment booked before we even arrived! This made it easier for me to get things set up before we even left on our new adventure!
One thing that was also important to me was researching hair salons specific to my hair type, restaurants that I want to venture to, and my sense of how a morning commute might be to my job.
Are there gas stations nearby? What about coffee shops?
Don’t Forget About the Fun Stuff!
We loved reading ‘best of’ lists for our new city, planning where we would enjoy al fresco dinners, late-night cocktails, or even neighborhoods we wanted to explore while walking Frida.
This gave us a fun sense of anticipation to finally reach and enjoy our new home that offset some of the stress during planning and execution!
With moving can come a lot of stress and unforeseen issues but do your best to be open-minded, start early to avoid feeling overwhelmed, and do your best to embrace the change and anticipation of your new area!
