Protecting our homes is one of those innate behaviors (and needs) built into our psyche. The home is our domain and we feel protective over it. It’s also worth remembering that some may have kids in the home, and they will need to be taken care of as well.
So we need to make sure we do everything in our power to protect our homes as much as possible. Have a look at the points listed here, and try to implement them to look after your home.
Nearest Police Station
One of the first security procedures you should take is finding out where the nearest police station is after moving to a new location. This is good for practical purposes and may also help you feel a great deal safer.
For instance, people in the 38th most dangerous city in the USA may need to contact the police more often than those living in safer ones.
Peace of mind can be achieved more quickly by knowing just how far away (or close) they are, and what their average response time is. Make sure you do your research and find this out as soon as you can.
Upon moving to my new neighborhood, I was happy to find out I was living quite close to several leader currently in the most powerful positions of our city with their sole job being to protect Boston.
Leave Lights on When You Go Out
When you go out for the night, there’s no reason to let everyone know. Think about keeping your lights on (low if you have dimmers to save energy) while potentially reducing the risk of your property being targeted, and people trying to break in.
You could even put some of the lights on a timer to make sure they come on at certain times of day or night.
Home Insurance
Any homeowner should make sure they have the right kind of home insurance. It’s essential for making sure you do what you can to protect your assets. No one is immune from the risks of break-ins as they are just a part of life.
The best thing to do is to try to combat the chances of them happening. But you also need a system in place in case your security is breached.
That’s why it’s important to make sure you have home insurance. That way if you have anything stolen you will be well placed to get an insurance pay out to cover your losses.
Don’t Leave Valuables on Display
Remember to never leave your valuables in plain view. A lot of people like to display the things that matter to them and give them pride of place in the home. But, this isn’t always advisable(if they are visible from the exterior of your home) because it can attract the wrong sort of attention.
Make sure anything valuable is safely hidden away and not visible to the outside world. This is the best way to prevent the risk of theft and burglaries in the area.
When it comes to home protection, there is a lot you can do. Most of the time it’s just a case of common sense, and thinking before you act. Consider what the aspects are that make your home more vulnerable. Then you can work on ways to better protect your home and make sure it is looked after.

March 30, 2016These are all good tips to keep your home secure. Our family have had lights on a timer for years via X10 Home Automation. Currently we are looking into a burglar alarm.

June 21, 2016Great common sense ideas… A couple notes, put your jewellery in a safe deposit box at the bank if you rarely wear it! Seriously! Most people don’t know this, but your home insurance policy limits what is payable on jewellery, furs, watches, etc. to $5,000-$6,000 maximum unless it is listed and scheduled (which means you pay more to have it insured). Also, DON’T cheap out on home insurance; not all policies are equal and you literally will get what you pay for… And I speak from experience.
