Have you ever shown small gestures, held a door open for someone, or stepped aside so a jogger could run past without interruption to their stride? How many times did you get a thank you for your consideration (especially if you live in Boston? Just kidding!)
The art of the thank you seems to be somewhat of a dying one, no longer do all job applicants send a personalized note to their interviewer, or a hand-written card when they are shown kindness.
Many of the resolutions we see being boldly announced for 2016 are self-facing, why not think about how we can also improve beyond ourselves in being conscious of our gratitude?
Sometimes you want to show that person just how grateful you are and it means a lot to hear it. Here are a few ideas on how to go the extra mile when someone has done so for you:
Be Honest.
Looking someone in the eye and offering up a genuine smile of thanks is a must if you want to show just how grateful you are. That person has potentially created a bit of an inconvenience for themselves so your day can run a bit more smoothly.
They probably didn’t do it for the thanks, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t show them their efforts were worthwhile. Flash them a smile and make their day a little brighter too.
Repay The Favor.
If someone has gone out of their way for you, it’s only fair you try and offer the same help later on to pass along the good will. If your friend looked after your cat for that long weekend you were away, perhaps you could take their dog out for a walk if they have to work late.
Helping each other is a true sign of friendship, so make sure it’s not all one-sided. Kindness doesn’t have to be repaid, but it’s also not something to take for granted.
A Gift Or A Card.
A little thank you card with a few handwritten words of gratitude can be a lovely gesture when someone has helped you out. Write about the difference it made to your day. Offer a little sentiment. Giving a gift is a wonderful gesture when someone has been kind to you.
You may opt for a bottle of their favorite (reasonably priced) wine or a certain indulgence they enjoy like chocolate.
A bouquet of flowers is nice but there is always room to go the extra mile and find something a little more thoughtful. Search online for your favorite gift stores or view more unique and unusual gift ideas at Cuckooland.com.
Talk About It.
Why not post on your Facebook page about the help you were offered? Letting everyone know that kindness was shown and very much appreciated can help inspire others to be a little more thoughtful.
If a child has been especially helpful, let their parents know. There can be a nice sense of pride in having your efforts recognized like that.
Bake Your Thanks.
Perhaps an elaborate gift is not in the cards, but we can always offer something. Making homemade cookies, cupcakes or the like are always a welcomed and delicious gesture.
If you have a talent as a DIYer, you can offer something else that you’ve made by way of arts and crafts to show your thanks.
There are a lot of reasons everyday to say thank you, and so many different ways to say it. How do you show your thanks to others?
