Life by rule is far too busy for most of us. Anything that makes our daily routine a bit simpler can help us move through tasks more quickly and accomplish more.
Like me do you dedicate yourself to your work but still make a conscious effort to achieve a balance of social, physical and personal pursuits?
Below are a few tips to a more effortless transition from the office to your girls night, dinner party or drinks date.
Mind Your Makeup.
The trick to makeup that lasts all day is both your preparation and final steps. I love to opt for products that have been created by makeup artists, such as Kevyn Aucoin makeup.
Makeup artists understand that products have to work hard starting with your primer, and their makeup doesn’t disappoint, ending with a setting spray or powder.
When you apply your makeup first thing in the morning, cleanse and moisturize first. Make sure you remove any excess oil with a toner.
Always apply a primer. This will provide you with a good base for your makeup. It will fill pores and help blend away imperfections.
It also helps achieve a lasting effect. If necessary, waterproof eyeliner and mascara will help you avoid your eye makeup running or the risk of you wiping off during the day.
Complete your makeup with translucent powder. This will set it and help it to last.
Before leaving the office, you should only need a quick touch-up. I typically use a shine sheet to blot any excess oil that accumulates during the day (it happens to everyone, come on now) before refreshing my skin with a sweep of powder and adding a bit more highlighter.
Keep Color Simple (Most of the Time)
If your outfit choice needs to work all day and night, keep the colors simple. Black is a popular option and will go with just about anything. It works well at the office as well as at happy hour.
To switch it up, opt for other neutrals like a soft brown or gray.
If brighter colors are frowned upon in your office, bring along a bright accessory like a scarf or a pair of sassy red heels to slip on instead. Even a brighter purse is something that will sit on your desk and not be a distraction for others.
Consider Your Comfort.
Make sure you’re comfortable in both environments. If you have to wear an outfit all day long, you won’t want to be shifting constantly or feel as if what you’re wearing is a bit too fitted for long-term wear.
Necklines that you have to constantly readjust, a hemline that rides up a bit too much or shoes that are even the slightest bit uncomfortable.
Don’t do this to yourself. Wherever possible, opt for comfort.
Wear Layers.
If you tend to bare a little more skin when you’re socializing, layer it during the day. Wear your dress with thin straps but add a cardigan or blazer.
If the neckline is a bit less conservative, wear a beautiful scarf during the day to hide it, and opt to keep it on or not for your evening look.
This will ensure your outfit is appropriate for the office and then transforms in the evening.
Keep Jewelry Streamlined.
If you intend to wear your jewelry all day, opt for something simple.
For example, stud earrings, simple necklaces, etc. If you want something more dramatic for your evening event like a statement necklace, row of bangles that will be noisy in the office or distracting (but beautiful) chandelier earring, take it with you instead.
A Small(er) Bag
Let’s be serious. It’s virtually impossible to head to work with a tiny purse, especially if you’re a professional that lugs your laptop to and from home each day.
Keep it simple with a smaller handbag on the days you have to head to an event. When you leave work, you won’t want to be carrying something bulky.
Leave non-essential items at home or the office for the day and bask in the lightness you get to experience.
Maintain a Consistent Beauty Regimen
If you want to maintain a busy lifestyle, you will need to be strict with your beauty regime.
If you don’t, your skin will start to look tired and you may be prone to breakouts.
Always remove your makeup thoroughly before you go to bed. Do this every day without fail and follow with a quality night cream. I know this is advice being parroted on every blog but you would be surprised how these consistent steps make all the difference.
Make sure you stay hydrated throughout the day and go easy on the alcohol.
A little planning and organization go a long way. If you know you’re going out, plan your wardrobe and makeup in advance. This will ensure your comfort and will free you up to concentrate on the job at hand; having fun.
What are some of the ways you take your look from day to night?
