I am not proud to say 2Chainz lyrics to “Birthday Song” are stuck in my head,
but with one day left before my birthday – I’m pretty darn excited.
This post is going to be about:
How to Plan Your Birthday in 5 Days or Less
Why you ask? Because I decided on Monday that I wanted to spend the evening
with my friends. I can be weird about birthdays..I would never want to send the
message that I am saying “Come celebrate my day of birth! Hurrah, yay me!”
Lol, that’s really what it feels like though.
I am also weird about presents. I prefer none. If you have taken some of your precious
free time to spend it with me, that is a gift that will turn into a memory which lasts far
longer than any material possession.
1. Venue: This is usually the only obstacle for me because the venue is what sets the
tone of the evening and I like to be original.
It does not need to be the current hotspot, instead I prefer a newer restaurant,
bonus points if it also has a lounge area. I scour the reviews, examine photos of
their decor and peruse the dinner and drink menus.
I want something fresh, not yet overrun and I prefer the patrons to be around my
age or older (no club rats, over-gelled spiky hair etc etc.)
My venue this year is fantastic especially because of their wonderful events planner.
This leads me to my next point.
2. Utilize the tools available to you. I am never one to demand any type of
special treatment or perks and most definitely never expect them.
However…If there is an aspect of the night that I want to happen, I will not hesitate
to politely ask if there is a way we can work to make it happen.
In this case I did contact the event planner of the venue and she was beyond
accommodating regarding the size of my party and one significant request
she immediately took care of for me. Instalove.
3. Captured Memories: All of my friends will be taking photos per usual but one thing
I have requested is for them to tag the photos with a specific hashtag to make it
easier for me to gather and potentially print out later.
One of my friends is also a professional photographer (no I never have her do my outfit
photos because I would feel as though I am wasting her precious studio time)
but she will usually get some wonderful snaps in throughout the night.
Again, not expected.
4. Party Ensemble. You cannot be the hostess with the mostess wearing any shabby old
thing. Where you are planning this last minute, you also have not given people time to
reach out to offer to dress you for the evening (motivation for better planning next year!)
I always have at least one or two dresses in my closet that have not yet been worn but
were purchased because I looked darn good in them. These dresses usually can cover a spectrum of events from date night, party, work event (ehh sometimes) etc.
The color usually sets me apart from my guests and the fit (a bit snug) usually encourages
me to spend a bit of extra time on the treadmill and think twice before indulging in
those Girl Scout cookies until after.
5. Expectations. This is something applicable to all areas of your life. DO NOT go into
this event expecting or even hoping everything will go perfectly.
You will be severely let down.
Take the most relaxed approach possible and when an issue arises, remember
this evening is about fun and if things do not go as planned..
it is not the end of the world. Life will go on, I promise.
So that’s it – how I planned tomorrow’s birthday (which I share with George Washington
and the ever lovely Drew Barrymore) in a mere 5 days.
How did you celebrate your last birthday?
