One of my friends is an incredibly brilliant person, always thriving for more, reading on topics he is interested in or wishes to further his knowledge upon and being proactive in improving himself physically and intellectually. I find these qualities so attractive because I take pride that I do the same almost religiously, finding myself on a constant quest to improve myself.
I have always had a love for reading since I was the first child in my class to learn to read full sentences. During naptime while all my classmates lay upon their nap mats, little Georgina was sometimes allowed to take over and read aloud – a story I only learned from my classmates mothers and not my own (maybe she did not want me to get a big head?)
My love of reading is what encouraged me to begin writing, something I get immense pleasure from and is one of the only ways I feel I can express my creativity. Though being a full-time student allows me very little time to read what I prefer, I manage to sneak in a book here and there.
I comprised a short list of the books I am reading (as I sometimes can be reading up to four or five at a time in my excitement about a newly released novel or autobiography) as well as a few I have on my list of “to buy and eventually read.”
Influence by Mary-Kate & Ashley Olsen
I have heard amazing things about this book, the exclusive interviews alone make me excited to devour each page. I also love that the book is available with two different covers, each with the face of a different sister so you can choose whichever you prefer.
Naturally Thin: Unleash Your SkinnyGirl and Free Yourself from a Lifetime of Dieting by
Bethenny Frankel
I admit I digress in my habits at times and have watched most of this seasons “The Real Housewives of New York.” Bethenny is by far my favorite, seemingly the most real, hardworking and incredibly witty persona. Being quite health conscious, Bethenny’s career as a natural-food chef held my interest and I was delighted that she would be coming out with a book geared towards her views on how to eat without the harsh restrictions of diets.
Frommer’s Shanghai by Sharon Owyang
As far as guide-books go, we all know Frommer’s as one of the best resources to rely on for useful information, practical details, in depth descriptions, tips on navigation and recommendations regarding dining and where to stay while visiting your planned destination. Shanghai is indefinitely a place of interest for me and I am collecting these guidebooks one by one.
Eight Pillars of Prosperity by James Allen
I am always thinking about my future, what goals are most important to me and where I would like to find myself within the next five and ten years. This book is dedicated to not only success, but lasting success based on his eight pillars: Energy, Economy, Integrity, System, Sympathy, Sincerity, Impartiality, and Self-Reliance.
The Art of Seduction by Robert Greene
In the two short periods I have had to devout to this book, I have progressed through a section on the “Ideal Lover” that makes reference to all sorts of people who had some profound impact on those around them whether Andy Warhol, various scientists, Louis XV’s Marquise de Pompadour: Jeanne Poisson, famous playwrights, respected philosophers, or Giovanni Giacomo Casanova. Greene provides the reader with great insight on what it takes to win people over by first recognizing them as one of eighteen types (or a hybrid of more than one) and then tailoring your methods to accomplish your desire ends. This is a book that seems to have a few tidbits worth holding onto, but one to truly take lightly.
