If you have the dream to one day build your own home, then you are not alone. There are many people out there that would rather build their dream home, rather than move into something that is already created.
You can put your own stamp on things and design the room sizes, shapes, and locations, just as you want them. It can be a long process when you start to get into building your home, though.
But it means that there are plenty of stops along the way to get the home just as you want it. Designing a home isn’t all just about how it will be decorated, though.
There are many other aspects to the build that you need to think about early on. Otherwise, it can be too late to fix them once it comes to decorating. So here are a few things that you need to think about.
Heating
We all know heating has to be in the home, but how will you go about it? Do you live in an area where solar panels could be an option or how about the location of the boiler and water heater?
If you are working with an architect or designer, then they will have ideas to help you. But you will be the one with the final decision.
If you live in a place that can get extremely cold temperatures, then would you consider something like pipe heating cable on all of your heating pipes?
It stops the pipes from freezing, which if they do, can lead to water damage. So it may be worth looking into. But it has to be done early on, or the pipes will all be boxed in.
Lighting
It is obvious that each room will have some kind of lighting. But it is a good idea to be quite specific early on before the walls get plastered.
Do you just want one main light in each room? Would you like wall lights or some specific lighting in recesses or in the kitchen?
If you have some quite specific ideas about lighting, then you need to have the plans in place. Then the house can be wired just as you want it and the lights installed. Many people forget just how early on you have to think about the home’s lighting.
Functionality of the Home
You might have ideas about what each room might look like. But in reality, you need to make sure that the home functions well.
If you have a dining room far away from the kitchen, then is it going to be practical to be carrying food back and forth between the rooms?
If it isn’t, then it is time to look at other options. You might want certain rooms in certain places, but it is important to look at how practical and functional that would really be.
Have you built your own home before? It would be interesting to hear about the little things that you considered before the building got underway.
