We all have a favorite piece of jewelry. It may be a special item to us like a gift from our parents, an academic associated piece or even a diamond engagement ring. A funky necklace that we always wear out to party in plain studded earrings that you wear all the time (for me it’s a simple rose gold eternity band that matches one I gifted my sister.)
Whatever piece of jewelry it is, you need to know how to look after it. Looking after your jewellery in the right way is good in many ways. It will keep the items of jewelry looking as good as new.
They will sparkle like they did the first day that you got them. It will also stop any oxidation that could affect the metals and give you that awful green mark on your earlobes or finger. You can read more about oxidation at www.ehow.com.
There are a few rules to follow for jewelry in general. You should avoid wearing jewelry when swimming. The chlorine in the water can damage the jewelry and leave marks. Another good rule to follow is to have a small pouch or box that you can store your jewelry in. A lot of high-end pieces of jewelry will come with something to store it in. So don’t just throw it away, make sure that you use it.
Now imagine you are getting ready to go to a party or a wedding reception. Think somewhere fancy as you will be putting plenty of your jewellery on. When do you put on your jewelry? Before you get dressed? As soon as you’re out of the shower? The correct answer is the very last thing that you do!
You want to put it all on last so that you don’t damage the metals or gemstones with hairsprays or perfumes. This goes for when you are cleaning the house too. We all have to clean our homes but make sure you take of your jewelry when you do it.
Rings and bracelets will be the most susceptible as they have more chance of getting in contact with the cleaning chemicals.
There are a few specifics for different metals and gemstones, though. For silver jewelry, like the necklaces you can find at www.elf925.com, you should wear it. That sounds ridiculous, right?
If it is on you, rather than just on a dresser, it has less chance of oxidizing with the air and causing it to rust or stain.
For yellow or rose gold jewelry.
You should polish it to keep it looking shiny and clean. It is important to do this often. Otherwise, the gold can get damaged. Be careful when washing your face or having a shower if you have rose gold or yellow gold jewelry. Be sure to take it off as soap and detergents can dull its sparkle. Not a good look!
If you are lucky enough to have a platinum piece of jewelry, you need to be careful what you do when wearing it.
Platinum is a durable metal but if it gets bashed or scraped during sports or something similar, it can affect the surface of the metal. If any knocks do occur to it, you can soften them by polishing them.
