Tis the season to decorate your home with beautiful, festive accessories that will make it look stylish and holiday themed.
I love decorating my place for Christmas and I’m sure I’m not the only one.
My favorite tradition is getting the tree, decorating with fresh wreaths, and generally just sprinkling the entire place with Christmas spirit.
I always start with the goal of turning my home into a winter wonderland. This year I’m determined to make that dream a reality, and I’m happy to pass on some of my best ideas.
After all, we all want to get in the festive spirit, don’t we? So, where to begin. Well, let’s start with buying and trimming the tree.
Christmas Tree, My Christmas Tree
The first decision you need to make is whether to buy a real tree this year or opt for a fake one. There is one key advantage of a fake tree.
It will never drop or droop which is useful because that way your tree will always look picture perfect. I do hate walking into the living room to find needles all over the floor and decorations that have fallen off as the tree has dropped.
But, there’s an advantage to getting a real one too and that’s the smell. I love the smell of a real Christmas tree. To me, it’s the true scent of Christmas.
If you are worried about the tree dropping, you just need to give it some help. Make sure that you are watering it at least once every two days.
You should also try and give it some minerals in the water that you can purchase from any good garden store. Do this and your tree will stay healthy through all the weeks through Christmas.
If you want to give your Christmas tree a little more sparkle this year, I suggest purchasing some crystal decorations. Expensive?
Certainly but the way they catch the light is absolutely stunning. Some crystal is designed in a way that it is able to shine with all the colors of the rainbow. It’s a stunning feature that you want on your tree.
At the top, you can either have a star or an angel. Or, if you want to be a little more adventurous, there is another option. You can get an electronic star for your tree.
If you purchase one from Bradford Exchange you can even get one with a sleight that travels around the star. It looks incredible in the dark and we’re sure if you have kids then they are going to absolutely adore it.
To finish off the tree, you can put some white, sparkly cloth around the bottom. This will make it look like a fresh layer of snow has fallen around the tree in your home.
It’s a magical touch and if you want to make it look even more fantastic add a little styrofoam underneath. This will give the snow some texture and finish off the effect with a few fake presents. Or, real ones if that’s where santa leaves them!
Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snow!
We all dream of a white Christmas with our property covered in white frosting like a gingerbread house. Unfortunately, some of us live in areas where a white Christmas just won’t be on the horizon.
But don’t worry, there are plenty of other options to consider. First, you can get fake snow for around your tree as we’ve already discussed.
It’s also possible to buy some spray to make your tree look like it’s been sprinkled with snow. Then, of course, there’s the classic snow spray that will make your windows look like there’s been a light covering of snow outside.
If we’re thinking about the exterior you can also get some lights that looks like artificial icicles. I’m sure you’ve seen these dangling lights in the shops plenty of times.
They look rather wonderful and can be hung up indoors or outside. The settings can be changed so you can choose how quickly the snow trickles down the icicles.
Don’t forget if you are using lights around the home, inside or outside, invest in LED bulbs. LED bulbs are useful for a few reasons.
First, they don’t heat up and that means there’s no chance of an accidental fire. You’d be surprised how often fires occur at Christmas due to poor, cheap lights that aren’t really that safe at all.
Second, it will save you a lot of money which is important, if you plan on making your home look like a neon winter wonderland.
The final thing to think about outside would be actual snow. I know what you’re thinking, you can’t control the weather. Maybe not but you can get a snow machine that is absolutely fantastic.
With this, you can create real snow to spread around the exterior of your property. These can be rented and will make your home look like lapland.
Don’t forget, though, you might also need to clean that snow up particularly if you don’t want it to melt near the exterior walls of your home.
That’s why you’ll probably also want to invest in a quality cordless snow thrower. This will allow you to move that freshly laid snow wherever you want!
Little Things I love
I love decorating my home with candles at Christmas. The glow from the flames make the whole home look festive and romantic. But I have learned there are a few issues with this idea.
Again, lighting candles around the home can be dangerous, particularly if you forget to blow one out. That’s why this year I’m planning to invest in some flameless candles.
These look like the real deal and if you that same beautiful festive glow. But unlike real candles, there’s no chance of them lighting anything on fire. They also won’t burn out leaving you with a mess in places around your home.
Then there’s the tinsel that you can use to decorate just about any area of your home that you like. I personally like putting it up around picture frames and banisters in the house.
It’s a little details but it helps make the home look a tad more magical at this time of year. It certainly cheers me up every time I see it.
Another little feature I love is door hangers. You can get door hangers with little Christmas symbols on them such as santa and mistletoe.
They look very classy and dress up your home in an elegant way. You can buy them online at prices that are sure to fit into your festive budget.
You can even hang these up as one of the only decorations and take a more subtle approach to your festive celebrations.
Finally, above the doors, you can hang bells and mistletoe to make sure anyone entering the home feels like it’s truly Christmas.
Hang these bells just right, and they’ll ring as the door is opened with a merry little sound. Do this and you’ll certainly feel the Christmas spirit every time someone enters your home.
Are there any other festive design ideas that you can think of? I’m sure there are plenty but I’ll leave you with one more.
Have you ever wished you could show your children santa passing by the window on a sleigh pulled by reindeer. Well, with a 3D wall decal they’ll certainly think that’s what they are seeing.
You can buy these online and they look absolutely incredible. Give your room a hint of magic this year with a window image that really looks like santa is passing by your home.
Wishing you a happy, healthy holiday season!
