Raise your hand if you would like to wake up feeling more refreshed tomorrow. I know I do, but the truth is that no matter how early I go to bed and how many cups of chamomile tea I’m having, a good night sleep seems to be largely out of my hands.
The frustration of laying awake at night, tossing and turning, and the fear of being a nuisance to a significant other who would have had a sound sleep if it wasn’t for their partners sleeplessness. It can make a person anxious!
Even if we can’t always control the stress in our lives, and not thinking about these things at night is easier said than done, we can control a few other things.
Like the calmness of a bedroom bathed in soft colors, a comfortably cool temperature and complete darkness. If this can help us even just a little bit on the way to avoid those sleepless nights, it’s worth a try.
Start with Your Mattress
As the main function of your bed is to help if not ensure a good nights sleep, investing a bit of extra money is more than worthwhile.
Just as you’d demand the best running shoes if you planned to spend a great deal of time running, you should give yourself a quality bed to sleep in.
Some people elect to buy a good mattress topper as they may not be able to readily afford a new mattress.
The comfort it provides makes your bed feel like you have an entirely new mattress (almost), so don’t hesitate on this one. Take a peek at this article for comparisons on toppers to figure out which is best for you.
What about the rest of the bed?
Some of you are warm sleepers. Feet sliding out of the duvet, or even tossing it off entirely as soon as you drift into dreamland.
Being too warm or too cold can seriously affect the quality of your sleep, and it’s not always as simple as just opening a window for an evening breeze to seep it.
If you wake up shivering at night or drenched in sweat when morning comes, you’re probably spending the night in the wrong kind of comforter.
A goose down duvet is an excellent choice; remember that although they say you need a different duvet during different seasons, some of us spend the entire year under the same summer duvet to keep cool.
Bedroom Layout
No matter if you’re into or aware of feng shui or not, how you design your bedroom could affect your sleep patterns.
I’m not going to write about the energy in your bedroom or that kind of stuff, but feel free to read more about the philosophy here if you’re interested.
There’s a lot more too it than that though, and some of it is relevant to us no matter what we believe it; such as keeping the right type of plants in your bedroom and making your bed a place for sleep and relaxation only.
Although you may not be too convinced by alternative tips such as placing your bed in a position that your feet don’t point towards the door, not storing things under your bed, or even the color of your bedroom will affect your mood.
It’s psychology and for many it actually works. To keep bright and happy colors in your living room to help on your energy levels, and a calm and soothing shade in your bedroom to help you relax, are simple aspects to keep in mind.
We process information through visualization and color, so surround yourself with those that will put you in the right kind of mood for bedtime. It will make a difference, even if you don’t notice it consciously.
Do the same for your bathroom, by the way, and it will help you feel refreshed in the mornings and calm in the evenings. Read more here to ensure a happier and more relaxed you in general.
Many people find it slightly frustrating when people brag about the lack of sleep they’re getting. In a complaining way, of course, the same kind of attitude people have when they say ‘I’m working so hard, I don’t have time to enjoy myself.’
It’s not healthy and rather a sign of them not taking proper care of themselves – which again leads to not being able to take good care of a family, career, and relationships.
If you want more peace and order in your life, the bedroom is a great place to start.
