2016 was an exciting year for home decor: we saw everything from carefully crafted hanging baskets to Scandinavian-inspired living.
But now we’re in 2017, and with a number of global landscapes changing, what can we expect?
Recently two top interior designers, Martyn Lawrence-Bullard and Beth Diane Smith, put together a list of trends they thought would sweep the decor market over the next year. Here’s what they came up with.
More Greenery, But Less Green Credentials
With the election and inauguration of Donald John Trump as the 45th president of the United States, so-called green policies are taking a backseat.
As a result, designers like Bullard see 2017 as the year to fight back against what they see as climate injustice and make their homes as green as they possibly can.
Bullard, who designs for the likes of Kendall Jenner, among others, has said that green is suddenly strong again – and it needs to be, given the fact that coal and oil are back on the ascendency.
If you want to use green in your home, Bullard suggests that you add things like emerald glasses to white plates. It’s cheap, and you’ve immediately got something that is up-to-the-minute fashionable.
Serene Environments
A feature of many of the top homes for sale today is that they are serene, either because they are situated in secluded locations, or because their interiors are designed to be peaceful.
According to Bullard, the way to achieve a serene environment in 2017 is to go tropical.
We’ve seen tropical prints from the likes of Prada and Marc Jacobson the runway, and now the trending is finding its way into the world of interior design too.
One way to incorporate tropical styles is to choose tropical patterns on pillows and trendy throws for the sofa.
Tropical items, he says, should be thought of as fashion accessories, like bags, ready to be thrown away once the new season starts.
The Combination Of Marble And Brass
Vogue recently named its top five designers. Among them was Young Huh.
He explains that marble and brass combinations will continue to dominate throughout 2017. We are going to see them make an increasing appearance in bathrooms and kitchens, he says, but not necessarily in the way that people expect.
The marble won’t be like traditional marble: it’ll be bright, glimmering white, natural and clean. The brass will be industrial and heavy duty.
Muted Colors
Bright colors in the home freak some people out. They’re so hard to get right, and for many people they can appear garish.
The good news according to Huh, is that bold colors are out this year. They’re being replaced by milder colors like camel, gray and bluish pink.
Increasing Use Of Geometrics
Geometrics are great when you want to make a home that feels curated, Huh says. This year, we’re likely to see geometrics inspired by ancient Asian and African cultures.
But they won’t look exactly the same: they’ll be modernized, building on the beauty of the original. Simple lines, geometric shapes and triangles are in vogue this year.
