By now, you’ve probably heard about dermaroller treatments. There may be some confusion since some people say they had it done at a spa while others talk about using it at home.
Like so many other cosmetic procedures, which option would work well for you depends on your skin care needs.
Spa Treatments
When you first arrive for an appointment at the spa, the technician will apply a numbing cream to the area of skin to be treated.
Once it takes affect, the specialist will begin using the dermaroller. They will roll it across the surface of the skin in a series of directions (up, down, side to side, diagonally) while applying mild pressure.
The dermaroller device has a handle with a cylinder on one end that is covered with micro-needles.
How many needles and how wide the cylinder is varies according to the area it is being used on. There are also differing needle lengths dependent upon the skin condition being treated.
Pressure is used when rolling it across the skin in order to puncture the skin and create micro channels that penetrate the deeper layer of skin.
These tiny wounds will heal normally. In the process of healing, the skin will produce collagen and elastins, which regenerate healthy skin cells.
It isn’t unusual for the skin to look like it is flushed or overexposed to the sun. This side effect disappears soon afterwards. If it causes discomfort, an ice pack or cooling cloth may be applied to provide relief.
Boosting The Benefits
Whether using a dermaroller device at home or having the procedure at a spa, there are ways to boost the results.
During the treatment, serums containing collagen, vitamins, or enhancing gels may be applied to the skin.
The micro channels that were created allow the creams to be readily absorbed by the skin. This makes the results even more pronounced.
Many people run to the spas for hair removal laser treatments, but lasers cannot slow hair loss or even reverse it.
For anyone struggling with hair loss, applying Minoxidil, Rogaine, or other products to the scalp prior to using a dermaroller is much more effective. Dermastamps are preferred for this so hair doesn’t get tangled on the roller.
Dermaroller Treatments
While other devices may not work with all skin tones, the dermaroller can be used with worrying about hyper-pigmentation or skin discoloration. It has multiple applications including:
- Reduce or reverse hair loss
- Reduce or remove stretch marks
- Reduce or remove cellulite
- Reduce or remove scars including acne scars
- Tightens and firms skin
While it may not completely remove deep scars, stretch marks, or cellulite, the dermaroller treatment can at least diminish the appearance, making it far less noticeable.
Why Would I Have a Dermaroller Treatment?
There are many cosmetic treatments using lasers, microdermabrasion, chemical peels and more. So why choose a dermaroller procedure?
- Works for all skin tones
- Can be on all areas of the body
- Less expensive treatment
- Makes serums and medications more effective
The Results
Bear in mind that the results of using dermarollers are not immediately noticeable.
It takes time for skin to repair itself, even with micro sized injuries. Collagen and elastin production doesn’t happen overnight either.
However, the skin will continue generating fresh collagen months after the initial treatment. That means the skin will continue to improve months after the dermaroller application.
