Whether you’re a gracious hostess or prefer to use your kitchen for relaxing with coffee, there’s no denying that it is remains a central area of the home. While some people choose to update their kitchen every couple of years, this can be expensive and time-consuming.
Instead of designing a kitchen that will only stay stylish for a year or two, create a space that will stand the test of time.
Kitchen trends come and go, but there are some things, that will never go out of style. If you want to create a kitchen that won’t need redoing every couple of years and instead will look timeless yet stylish for years, I consulted the professionals during a recent visit to a beautiful design showroom in Cambridge.
To create a timeless kitchen, consider a few of these design ideas and use them for inspiration.
Opt for Understated fixtures
To give your kitchen an elegant look, it’s best to opt for fixtures that are higher end (it’s okay to splurge on smaller details I promise!) Elements like molded cabinet doors brushed chrome handles, and light fittings will lend your space a beautiful look.
If you want your kitchen to last for years, it’s important to invest in the fixtures. Spend a little more to ensure that the fixtures you have are strong and resistant to wear.
To get some inspiration and design ideas, have a browse online. Often, sites like Pinterest (take a peek at my In the Kitchen board) are great for finding design inspiration as they’re packed full of ideas.
Choose neutrals
Sticking to neutral shades for your kitchen will help you to design a space that will stand the test of time. Bright tones come in and out of fashion, but neutral tones are always in style.
Neutrals also create a much more sophisticated space. Have you ever spent the night at a fancy restaurant that was gaudily decorated and immediately wished to return? No – I didn’t think so.
Almost every elegant space is decorated in neutrals, from hotel rooms to higher end restaurants.
Many of us make the mistake of thinking that neutrals have to be boring, but that’s not the case. Select a shade that’s smart, elegant and interesting, like grey, navy blue or beige. Remember, when it comes to neutrals, white isn’t your only option.
Be selective about the features
It’s far too easy to spot a sink that’s in style in a home interiors magazine and decide there and then that you have to have it. Don’t rush your decisions when it comes to your kitchen’s features.
Be selective and think each choice through carefully. Aim to pick features that are smart, classic and sturdy.
For example, instead of opting for a sink made of metal, select a farmhouse-style one made from china. Or, instead of selecting a simple stove, opt for a modern Ara. These might cost more, but in terms of longevity they can last for over 20 years. Plus, they’re elegant and sleek and won’t ever go out of style.
For a counter that will last for years without scratching, go for a marble or granite countertop. The harder the material you opt for, the longer your surfaces will look good for. You may have to pay a little more, but if you want your kitchen to stand the test of time, it’s worth it.
Don’t forget to add your personal touch
Just because you’re creating a classy, timeless kitchen, that doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish. The best way to add style to this type of space is with things like the flooring – opt for a checked design. And also with the splash boards – brick shaped tiles always look great.
The most important thing is that whatever you use to add style fits with the design of the kitchen and won’t affect how timeless the space looks.
Use these ideas for inspiration and create a beautiful, classic kitchen (and keep me updated on any projects and/or renovations you have in the works!)
