“I almost want to trick people into hanging with something that is really cool with a pop song. It’s almost like the spoonful of sugar and I’m the medicine”
I decided to make my 2nd blog an ode to one of the most inspiring upcoming artists of our time. A young lady who went against the grain every step of her life, started at the bottom of the music industry totem pole playing at open mike nights in New York and carefully studying her craft at Tisch being one of only 20 children in the world admitted (she was admitted early).
Her poker face..we cannot read it, her life? Beautiful, Dirty and Rich. I am talking about none other than Stefani Joanne Germanotta or as we know her..Lady Gaga.
Who is Lady Gaga?
- She grew up in a nice Italian family in New York singing along to Cyndi Lauper and Michael Jackson on her little plastic tape player.
- At age 13 while we were still shopping at Abercrombie and going to school dances Gaga had already finished her first piano ballad and at 14 was playing live at The Bitter End’s open mike nights in NY.
- You would never guess she attended one of the most exclusive, conservative, private schools in Manhattan, The Convent of the Sacred Heart School. One attended by the children of many prestigious families including both the Hilton sisters.
- Many people wonder aloud just why Lady G never seems to wear pants. She once clarified;
“My grandmother is basically blind, but she can make out the lighter parts, like my skin and hair. She says, ‘I can see you, because you have no pants on.’ So I’ll continue to wear no pants so that my grandma can see me.”
“The Fame is about how anyone can feel famous,” Gaga explains, “Pop culture is art. It doesn’t make you cool to hate pop culture, so I embraced it and you hear it all over The Fame. But, it’s a shareable fame. I want to invite you all to the party. I want people to feel a part of this lifestyle.”
Of her very first single “Just Dance” she explains it as having a “fun L.A. celebratory vibe” and of “Boys, Boys Boys” she admits to it being her female version of Motley Crue’s “Girls Girls Girls” with her own twist that even rockers could enjoy.
Much of her music comes from her life experience, namely “Beautiful Dirty Rich” was inspired during her time of finding herself while growing up on the Lower East Side, partying and dabbling in the things that may have not been so good for her. “That time, and that song, was just me trying to figure things out,” says Gaga.
“Once I grabbed the reigns of my artistry, I fell in love with that more than I did with the party life.”
Lastly, “Nothing I Can Say (eh eh)” is Gaga’s version of bittersweet love song that was influenced by Queens “Brown Eyes.” She describes it as “the most vulnerable song on the album, Eh Eh’ is my simple pop song about finding someone new and breaking up with the old boyfriend.”
Some Bonus Tracks You Don’t Want To Miss: (Two more serious, soul-searching ballads: “No Floods” and “Let Love Down”), “Fever” and most definitely check out “Kaboom.”
Some of my favorite tweets:
March 4th: “getting my hair done. lavender blond is my newest obsession. 7 days till the fame ball. ill begin vomiting with creative anxiety on the 9th.”
March 2nd: “in my apt in hollywood, the whole haus is here. sketches sprawled out on the kitchen table, cellphones ringing, fabric swatches in my sushi”
March 28th: “right..gaga turned 22..in a mirrored panty humping a Miami gogo dancer at 2 am to the beat of my first single “just dance” best birthday”
“I always loved rock and pop and theater. When I discovered Queen and David Bowie is when it really came together for me and I realized I could do all three,” says Gaga, who nicked her name from Queen’s song “Radio Gaga” and who cites rock star girlfriends, Peggy Bundy, and Donatella Versace as her fashion icons.
“I look at those artists as icons in art. It’s not just about the music. It’s about the performance, the attitude, the look; it’s everything. And, that is where I live as an artist and that is what I want to accomplish.”
Forever giving love to her fans, Gaga sent out via Twitter:
happy valentine’s day. don’t be depressed. nothing some blush and a tiara wont fix. 3 shows today. 2 down, one to go. xxgagaloo2:37 PM Feb 14th from web
I’ve been listening to her for well over a year and have never felt so inspired by an artist. Her clothes – or the lack thereof, her hair, she doesn’t let anything inhibit her creativity which is why we can consider her a true artist.
I am constantly awed by her authenticity. Check her out, give The Fame a listen and make your own decision. There is no doubt in my mind you will find at least on track to add to your daily playlist.
