There is nothing I love more than an thick, luxurious mane to whip around
while pretending I am starring in a L’oreal commercial.
However, not everyone was blessed with this kind of hair. Many (including myself at times) were given very thin, fine hair that wouldn’t whip around even if we tried.
I have spent forever trying to find ways to get my hair to thicken up.
I find that the following techniques help most effectively:
Live an Active Lifestyle
Getting active stimulates your entire body. Running, walking, swimming – it’s all great. Exercise helps to get new nutrients to our muscles while increasing the blood flow (incredibly necessary for growth! Find an exercise you enjoy for the best results. Mix things up a bit when you get bored!
Take Special Care of Your Hair
Try the following methods:
Avoid heat styling. Only use appliances when you have to.
Dry your hair with a towel carefully.
Use a wide toothed comb to gently detangle your hair when it’s wet. Never brush.
Use appropriate products that suit your hair type when washing.
Give yourself a bit of a scalp massage as you wash to encourage growth.
Don’t wash hair too often, as this strips it of natural oils.
Use conditioning treatments.
Don’t use too much product after washing.
Always use a heat defense spray when using heat.
Eat a Natural Diet
If your diet is as natural as possible, your hair will thank you. Eating plenty of vegetables and fruit will always have positive impacts on your health. Greek yoghurt, eggs, nuts, and seeds are said to be especially beneficial. Foods that contain healthy fats should be included – fat doesn’t make you fat when it’s good fat, I take an Omega-3 supplement each day.
Try Hair Thickening Supplements
Thickening supplements are sometimes effective, but you should read reviews and ask around for opinions before you buy your hair essentials. I once heard that horse shampoo was effective, but haven’t tried it myself. Personally I have found biotin and pre-natal vitamins spark an intense amount of growth, a cycle I usually incorporate prior to Summer for longer, shinier hair.
Hair Extensions
If all else fails, you always have hair extensions. I have mine privately sourced by my stylist but there are an endless amount of great companies like Dirty Looks.
I love getting a blowout and having the stylist comment on what great hair was used, it is worth every penny and add a great natural volume that most people cannot tell is not mine.Mine always last me ages so they are well worth the price.
What steps do you take to achieve thicker, healthier hair?

July 31, 2014Hey there Georgina,
I have naturally thick hair and it has it's disadvantages. When my hair is long, it gets heavy and I start getting headaches.
I thin it out every now and even my hairstylist teases me about it.
Great tips. Definitely passing it along!
