There are many common health problems in life, but back pain is perhaps the most common of all.
So many people suffer from it, and it can get worse if you don’t have a proper mattress to sleep on each night.
Consequently, here’s a short guide to help you choose a mattress that will limit your back pain and help you sleep better:
Mattress Firmness
Finding the perfect firmness for back pain can be quite tricky. On the one hand, you don’t want it to be too firm as it will be like sleeping on a plank of wood.
This won’t be good for the health of your back, and you’ll wake up sore in the morning. As a result, most people get lured into thinking that soft mattresses are a must.
However get one that’s too soft and your back has no support, with you waking up still in pain.
It’s all about finding that perfect firmness, somewhere in between the two ends of the spectrum. You want it to be firm enough to give you that support, but soft enough to provide you with the soothing feeling of comfort when you lie down on it.
The severity and source of your back pain will dictate where you are on the firmness scale.
Not everyone with back pain will be the same, your best option is going out and giving a few mattresses a comprehensive test (and consulting with a specialist before making the investment.)
Mattress Type
There are different types of mattress that you have to consider along with the firmness. First, there are innerspring mattresses.
These are your traditional mattresses with springs inside formulating support. Then you have foam mattresses, which are more modern and made with no springs, just memory foam of different densities.
These mattresses are a bit complex, but there are an endless amount of resources out there to help you learn about foam mattresses before you buy.
Regarding back pain, memory foam mattresses tend to be better. They offer the right combination of comfort and support. The foam transforms useful to adjust to your body shape, ensuring your back is giving the best platform to rest on as you sleep.
A lot of people also find they relax more when sleeping on a memory foam mattress when compared to an innerspring one.
Mattress Reviews
In truth, the above two points are the only two things you can look for when finding a mattress for your bad back. Of course, you should consider the price too, but that really depends on the person.
Lastly, consider the importance of mattress reviews. Before you buy any mattress, always go online and look at what other people have to say about it.
Be on the lookout for people like you that bought it to cope with their back pain that is similar to your own. If they give great reviews and say the mattress cured their pain forever, then you may be interested in learning more about that particular model.
Similarly, if there are countless bad reviews then you know to stay away from that mattress.
What are things you consider when making changes in your place, and what resources do you count on?

April 20, 2017I like how you mentioned finding a mattress that’s not too firm but still has support. My fiance and I are about to get married, so we’re trying to find a good mattress to buy. I know he’s had some issues with his back in the past, so maybe it would be a good idea to test whatever mattress we’re looking at so we can find one firm enough to support his back.
