Your bedroom should be the place where you have no trouble relaxing. It’s where we go at the end of a long day of work to escape. Your layout and decor should in no way interfere with your ability to drift off into a fitful nights rest.
Surprisingly, this is still an area where many people struggle. Unable to provide their bedroom the attention it deserves in regards to design, often times their bedroom remains with the stark, bare minimum knowing it is the room people are unlikely to see.
With your bedroom being one of the places you spend the most time while at home (awake or not), it should be the focal part of your design aesthetic and in doing so, you need not break the bank.
What may seem a daunting task certainly does not need to involve a radical overhaul of your existing decor. Instead utilize a few essential tricks that will drastically change the mood of your bedroom for the better.
As I am in the midst of a significant move, I took a lot of time to consider the look and layout of my bedroom and here is what I came up with:
Keep it Neutral.
The bedroom is not a place for chaotic color schemes as for most, they would create distraction and is better saved for other living spaces, if one is so inclined.
Instead, the bedroom should be a place for tranquility. Using a neutral color scheme will promote a calm environment. There is a strong correlation between color, shape, and mood.
Do some research to find the theme you’re looking for, at my previous place it was the palest yellow and you’ll have to wait to see what was selected at the new.
You may also consider switching out your tired old carpet for authentic wood flooring and a rug instead – a change I am excited for. It will help transform your bedroom immensely.
Change Your Sheets
Have you become one of those people that neglects their sheets, opting for a set due to it’s inexpensive price tag or lack of time to put more time and thought into your selection? We’re all guilty of that at some point.
Whenever I am in the market for new sheets (at least once a year), I think about the feeling of crawling into bed after a long day and being greeted by fresh, impossibly soft bedding. That typically helps shape the direction of where I begin my search, and ultimate my final decision.
If your bedding is old and tired, you could use this as an opportunity to upgrade to something at your favorite boutique for the home, or a brand that focuses solely on your need at hand like Martex sheets.
Make Use of Your Wall Space.
One of the biggest mistakes we make is leaving our walls bare. This only makes your bedroom feel almost clinical. Not what we had in mind when it comes to relaxing! Instead, the quickest way to give your bedroom an injection of personality is to decorate the walls.
It doesn’t need to be anything too overwhelming. Just a few of your favorite photos, a print or piece of revered artwork – something sentimental.
Utilize Your View
One of the selling points for my new place was it’s private roofdeck and the endless amount of natural light that streams into the bedroom. If you have a spectacular view from your bedroom window, you better do everything you can to make the most of it!
If you’re overlooking something especially scenic, think about installing a bay window to further enhance it. Finish off with a seating area to allow others to enjoy it while visiting.
What are some ways you have decorated your bedroom that make it a more peaceful space?
