Gloucester, MA |
What a wonderful weekend in New England it was!
On our way to “M’s” neck of the woods he asked me “Who would you consider your favorite writer?”
After we chatted somewhat briefly about my answer(s), he quietly offered that we visit one of the most important sites for American literature to date on Saturday. The Old Manse in Concord, MA.
Home to the most revolutionary writers (Thoreau, Emerson & Hawthorne) in American philosophy and The Transcendentalist movement, just being within The Old Manse’s vicinity was inspiring.
To say “M” is a history buff would be a gross understatement. So when our interests overlap (history and literature) it is monumental.
I do feel quite fortunate he has been the reason for my deeper interest in history.
People tend to forget how important New England was (and still is) from our earliest days..
is marvelous to see how many powerful writers, orators, and soldiers started up
just at the time when they were wantedβ¦all made to unite in the one object of
establishing the freedom and independence of America.β [Nathaniel Hawthorne]
I may have been asking if I could hold his gun… |
He is trying not to laugh/smile |
On our walk back we saw this beautiful creature |
We made a quick stop at the historic Hartwell Tavern as we could not resist.
Wishing to warm up a bit, we stopped at Haute Coffee in Concord for the best cup of coffee I have ever tasted (we had an Ethiopian blend, nutty and full of flavor.)
Their egg sandwiches on fresh brioche were an added treat!
That evening we saw Thor (loved it) before heading to bed at a somewhat reasonable hour.
Sunday we had brunch at the infamous Agawam Diner, did some shopping and while M went to the gym for a workout, I did some free-writing.
That evening I convinced him to finally try frozen yogurt. Just as I expected, he is hooked.
You should have seen his eyes light up at all of the offered toppings!
Back in my area, rested and content, it is time to begin a new and ultra-productive week.
What was the highlight of your weekend?

November 11, 2013This does look like a fun weekend. I did not going anywhere but had an exciting weekend. A 10 week old kitten materialized in our driveway wailing its head off. We think he came out of the lillte woods property owned by the water co. We are going to keep him.

November 11, 2013Looks like a great weekend. Beautiful autumn days, a historical visit, and delicious food!
While I admire they wanted to start a free America the whole killing of Natives, slavery, treatment of Asians and other racism makes me sick to my core. While there is nothing to be done to change what happened then_ I'm not sure if I want to admire our founding fathers for making a strong nation or spit in their face, for the horrible treatment inflicted on others who didn't look like them. I'm on a tangent- I'll stop, haha.
I took am a Thoreau fan and I also like some of Ralph W. Emerson's work as well.

November 12, 2013Tangents are completely welcomed always Emily, xo

November 11, 2013sounds like a great weekend! i will admit i was not a huge fan of history while in school but have become quite a scholar later in life! … maybe it's because of little "fieldtrips" we've taken which are far better than reading about a historical even in a book! … so i guess that makes me a lazy history buff. ha!
Georgina Castellucci
November 12, 2013I agree Chandra, I love the more interactive experience and there is nothing lazy as long as you're actively learning (no matter what method!) xo
