Eating healthy and organic food is beneficial to our bodies and a positive step many of us attempt but aren’t always successful in achieving.
Buying all of that nourishing and delicious produce can take a toll on your wallet so it’s important to know how to buy organic while staying within your grocery budget.
Where to get the best possible deals and which items are those that are more important to buy organic.
The following tips will help you with all of previously mentioned while being able to better get to know the organic Boston community.
Create a Budget.
This is where a lot of people get it wrong. Creating a budget should be the first thing you do when you are planning to shop for anything.
There are apps that can help you create a budget from the comfort of your phone while on the go, no need to bother with cumbersome Excel sheets.
I love YNAB (you need a budget) and have small amounts transferred to a savings account automatically each day to supplement my larger savings efforts.
These apps are easy-to-use and convenient for on the go tracking. We should never go shopping without first having a budget that is well planned. If we do not take budgeting seriously, we are likely to overspend.
Get to Know the Boston Organic Locals.
Shopping from high-end stores is fun, and occasionally necessary for specialized items. once in a while. In order to get groceries in a more budget friendly way, you should try getting to know your local markets, including the farmer’s markets.
Doing so saves not only financially but can cut your time spent in the larger, more crowded shops while supporting your local economy.
I love Allandale Farm in Chestnut Hill, the Boston Public Market, and City Feed & Supply in JP and you can find a list of all organic farms in Massachusetts here!
Use your digital resources.
We have convenience and technology at our fingertips for every other area of our lives, transportation, banking, why not for groceries?
There are a lot of resources to help you in buying organic food at great prices. My favorites are Boston Organics who has delivered to my office, Thrive Market, Amazon Fresh, healthy subscription boxes (Graze, LifeBox, , organicdeals.com and a host of other online platforms that are designed to bring you the best organic food.
Doing this would also save you a lot of time, as most of these services are delivery-based.
Though I am not a vegetarian, I refer back to the Boston Vegetarian Society frequently for their resources on where the nearest CSA is, farmer’s market schedules, and in scouting out Pick-Your-Own farms.
Be a 2/3 Vegan
Vegetarian food is very clearly healthy but also less expensive to incorporate into your day. Try to eat all vegan food during the day, except for dinner.
This would leave you with large reserves of energy for your daily activities, and is also a healthy choice. Eating vegan is also very cost effective, so it can help you save within your grocery budget.
Get to Know Your Local Farmers Market Schedule
Shopping at the farmers market is always just a nicer experience than those in grocery stores. I love the Haymarket Outdoor Market that starts on Thursdays when picking up ingredients for a dish that evening or fruits for the weekend.
It’s nice to have the opportunity to buy fresh food at the best possible prices while supporting local farmers.
Know What Really Needs to be Organic
Shopping organic can be a bit tricky. There are a lot of foods that do not really need to be organic.
Bananas and avocados for example have thick peels so they are naturally resistant to pesticides. You should make sure these 19 foods are always organic.
Shopping and eating organic can really be a new experience that has potential to provide you a deeper connection with your city.
How do you approach your own grocery shopping (whether organic or not?)

June 30, 2016Even though I don’t live in Boston, I feel like a lot of this is applicable to other places too. Thanks!

July 14, 2016Love this post! I am a fan of Boston Organics and the local farmer’s market. We have an Organic CSA too that I love (Lindentree CSA in Lincoln). I need to refresh my list of top foods to buy organic.
