I make it no secret that the majority of what is shared on A Noted Life is Boston based (and it’s surrounding areas.) I was raised in a small suburb of Massachusetts and it is where I have strong ties, especially as much of my family now lives on the Cape.
In the past year, a lot of change has come my way. Some welcomed and some less so. I took a career leap, began several new relationships with organizations I care deeply about and began to put down some serious roots. Though I am now making a move into one of my favorite Boston neighborhoods, my thirst for travel has only grown stronger with each passing day.
The thought of the new, unexplored and ability to become a fuller person, and rich with experiences. To be able to offer new perspectives and a deeper view (both of myself and the world.)
Several weeks ago, my childhood friend quit her job, grabbed her passport and flew to Italy where she is now living in the countryside on the outskirts of Milan. An invitation to visit quickly arrived just as one of my other close friends asked if I would like to join her and her sister for an extended tour of Europe.
And thus, my travel planning began with careful consideration of the following:
The Destination.
Beyond Italy, I’m not yet sure of the other exact locations I will visit. I have been fortunate to see many of the destinations in the U.S. many place emphasis on.
Palm trees and beaches in California, feel the hospitality of the South, and catching a Broadway Show in none other than the great New York.
The Accommodations.
Very few opt to embark on a journey on a shoestring budget. Instead electing to save up as to ensure nothing holds them back from each experience that comes their way.
Exploring options and booking a mix of high and low is what appeals to me most. A few nights somewhere nicer, then something more meaningful and authentic like the vacation rentals at Roomorama.com.
Beautiful accommodations for short-term stays that offer both a touch of luxury and a little added privacy. I love the idea of renting my own place for a week or two far from crowds, wherever I’m going and feeling at home while away.
The Journey.
If I were staying in the U.S., there would be no doubt that I’d take a road trip. Renting a fun car and take to the highways, stopping in different places on my way to the final destination.
When I’m traveling I document everything I’m feeling in my words, and capture everything else with photos.
Taking all the time needed to ensure nothing is overlooked, there are no shortcuts. Traveling abroad requires booking a flight or two and being a creature of habit I prefer the same airlines, an aisle seat and if an afternoon or evening flight, a glass of wine prior to or shortly after takeoff.
The Adventure.
Naturally, what I’ll do on this vacation will depend on where I’m going. I always have flexible guidelines of what I want to do no matter the destination and a few essentials I could not miss.
I’d like to meet new people, whether those also traveling and especially those living in my host country.
It goes without saying I probably look forward most to the local cuisines, know very well they will surpass the restaurants we know and love in Boston.
I am excited for the adventures to come, mine, and yours.
